October is National Window Coverings Safety Month

Window treatments are an important component of the design of a child’s room. Safety should be the first consideration when choosing a solution that also meets light control and design considerations.

The Window Coverings Safety Council and the U.S. Product Safety Commission suggest that homes with young children should have cordless window products.  Young children are curious and can become entangled in hanging window cords. These cords can become strangulation hazards.

If possible:

  • Replace corded window treatments with cordless products.

If replacement is not possible:

  • Adjust existing cords to the shortest possible length.
  • Keep all cords out of reach of children.
  • Use a retrofit kit for cords.
  • Avoid locating cribs, beds, chairs, or benches below or next to windows.
  • Check window coverings regularly for proper installation.
  • A continuous cord loop on window coverings that extend to the floor should be anchored securely and permanently to the wall or floor.
  • Maintain window coverings according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Today, is a good time to check your window treatments for safety hazards, hanging cords, or damaged products. Replace older window coverings with new, safer cordless products. If replacement is not an option, please contact the Window Coverings Safety Council for a free retrofit kit for cords.

In the months of September and October, we provide a 15% discount on replacement cordless shades for homes with children.
